Occupational Tax Certificate (AKA Business License)

Pursuant to OCGA 48-13-7 every business in the City Limits, whether commercial or home-based must apply for an Occupational Tax Certificate (business license) and renew it annually. All business licenses expire December 31 of each year. Each person who is licensed by the Secretary of State pursant to OCGA Title 43 shall provide evidence of their current and valid state licensure. A citation to Municipal Court may be issued for operating a business without a license.

An Occupational Tax Certificate must be obtained prior to conducting business in the City of Sylvester. Each Occupational Tax certificate is valid for a calendar year, January 1 thru December 31.

  • Prior to submitting your occupational tax certificate application, please check to ensure your location and proposed business meets the City’s Zoning Regulations by contacting the Community Development Department.
  • Home based businesses may require an approved conditional use per the city’s zoning regulations. Contact the Community Development Department.
  • Building safety inspections will be required before the issuance of a license.
  • Convenience stores and bakeries must be inspected by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
  • Businesses such as restaurants, food vendors, hotels/motels, public swimming pools, body art facilities, etc. require approval by the Worth County Environmental Health Department. They can be reached at 229-777-2168.
  • Alcohol Licenses are required for those who wish to sell any alcoholic beverages. Contact the Deputy City Clerk at 229-776-8505.
  • Building and sign permits can be obtained from the Community Development Department.

Upon issuance, the Occupational Tax Certificate and Certificate of Occupancy must be posted in a visible location in the place of business.
